While the NBA All Star Game format has changed in recent times, the culture of Western and Eastern Conference All Stars still remains.

Here we look at the greatest East and West All Star Teams in NBA History, assembled based on their success and accolades in their respective conferences.

EAST ALL STARS

STARTERS :

1) LEBRON JAMES (POINT GUARD / SMALL FORWARD)

LeBron James is widely considered one of the best basketball players of all time and has won numerous accolades, including four NBA championships and four NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. James has been selected to the All-Star team a record 19 times, every year since 2004–05, and has been named the All-Star Game MVP thrice.

2) MICHAEL JORDAN (SHOOTING GUARD)

Jordan’s individual accolades and accomplishments include six NBA Championships and Finals MVP awards, ten NBA scoring titles (both all-time records), five NBA MVP awards, ten All-NBA First Team designations, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, fourteen NBA All-Star Game selections, three NBA All-Star Game MVP awards.

3) LARRY BIRD (SMALL FORWARD)

Bird played for the Boston Celtics for his entire 13-year
career, from 1979 to 1992. During his tenure with the Celtics, he won
three NBA championshipms, was a two-time NBA Finals MVP, and won the
regular season MVP award three times. He also made the All-Star team 12
times, was named to the All-NBA First Team three times, and won the All-
Star Game MVP award twice.

4) BILL RUSSELL (CENTRE)

He played for the Boston Celtics for his entire 13-year career, from 1956 to 1969. During his tenure with the Celtics, Russell won an unprecedented 11 NBA championships, an all-time record in the NBA. He was also a five-time MVP, and a 12-time All-Star. He was known for his rebounding, defense, and his ability to make his teammates better.

5) WILT CHAMBERLAIN (CENTRE)

He was known for his scoring, rebounding, and size, standing at 7 feet 1 inch tall. Chamberlain played for the Warriors from 1959 to 1965, and in his first season with the team, he set the rookie scoring record with 37.6 points per game. He also set the single-game scoring record by scoring 100 points in a game in 1962. In 1965, Chamberlain was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played for six seasons. He helped the team win the NBA championship in 1967, and was named the Finals MVP.

6) OSCAR ROBERTSON (POINT GUARD)

Robertson played for the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks during his 14-year career, from 1960 to 1974. During his career, Robertson was a 12-time All-Star, a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team, and a one-time MVP. He was known for his versatility and all-around game, and he was one of the first players to regularly record triple-doubles (double figures in points, rebounds, and assists in a single game). He was the all-time leader in triple-doubles, with 181 in his career, until Russell Westbrook broke his long standing record.

7) JULIUS ERVING (SMALL FORWARD)

Julius “Dr. J” Erving played for the American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1971 to 1976 and the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1976 to 1987. Erving joined the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, where he played for 11 seasons. With the 76ers, he won the NBA championship in 1983, and was named the Finals MVP. He also won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award in 1981 and was named to the All-NBA First Team in 1981, 1982, and 1983. He was a 11 time All-star and 3 time ABA champion.

8) DWYANE WADE (SHOOTING GUARD)

Wade was drafted fifth overall by the Heat in the 2003 NBA Draft, and immediately established himself as a star in the league, he was the NBA Finals MVP in 2006, when the Heat won their first championship in franchise history, he also led the team to two more championships in 2012 and 2013 forming a lethal duo with LeBron James. He was a 13 time All-Star, 8 time All-NBA Team and won the NBA scoring title in 2009. He is one of the greatest defensive guards in the history of the game.

9) GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO (POWER FORWARD)

Giannis quickly established himself as a talented player, with a unique combination of size, speed, and skill, He was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2017 and has since been named an All-Star every year, winning the All-Star Game MVP in 2019. He was named the NBA MVP in 2019 and 2020. He’s led the Bucks to a NBA Championship in 2021 and bagged the Finals MVP. He also won Defensive Player of the Year in the 2019–20 season.

10) ISIAH THOMAS (POINT GUARD)

Isiah Thomas played for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1981 to 1994, and was a member of the“Bad Boys” Pistons teams that won back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. Thomas was known for his scoring, playmaking, and leadership on the court. He was a 12-time NBA All-Star and a member of the All-NBA First Team twice. He led the league in assists per game for the1984–1985 season, and also led the Pistons to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 1988–1990 winning the two in 89–90.

11) WALT FRAZIER (POINT GUARD)

Walt Frazier played for the New York Knicks from 1967 to 1977 and was a member of the team that won the NBA championship in 1970 and 1973. Frazier was known for his scoring, playmaking, and defensive abilities on the court. He was a 7-time NBA All-Star and a member of the All-NBA First Team twice. He led the league in assists per game in the 1969–1970 season and was known for his flashy and creative ball-handling skills.

12) CHARLES BARKLEY (POWER FORWARD)

Barkley was known for his scoring, rebounding and ability to get to the free-throw line, his nickname was “The Round Mound of Rebound” due to his height and weight (6’6″ and 252 lbs) that didn’t prevent him from having a great leaping ability and quickness. He was a 11-time NBA All-Star, a member of the All-NBA First Team 5 times and won the NBA MVP award in 1993.

COACH : PHIL JACKSON

The “Zen Master” Phil Jackson coached the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers, from 1989 to 2010. He is most greatly renowned for his partnership with Michael Jordan in securing 6 Championships for the Chicago Bulls that included 2 three-peats. Phil was known for his ability to lead successful teams and create a winning culture. He led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998, and the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010. He is the only coach in NBA history to win 11 NBA championships and that makes him a clear favourite as the Head Coach of the All Time Eastern Conference All Stars .

WEST ALL STARS

STARTERS:

1) EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON (POINT GUARD)

Magic played for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA from 1979 to 1991 and 1996. Johnson was known for his playmaking, passing, and leadership on the court. He was a 12-time NBA All-Star and a member of the All-NBA First Team 9 times. He led the league in assists per game for the 1983–1984 season and was a member of the Lakers team that won five NBA championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. He was also a member of the 1992 US Olympic “Dream Team”.

2) KOBE BRYANT (SHOOTING GUARD)

Kobe played for the Los Angeles Lakers for his entire 20-year career in the NBA, from 1996 to 2016. Bryant was known for his scoring, competitive drive, and work ethic on the court. He was a 18-time NBA All-Star and a member of the All-NBA Teams 15 times. He won the NBA MVP award in 2008 and was the NBA Finals MVP twice in 2009 &2010. He also led the Lakers to five NBA championships.

3) KEVIN DURANT (SMALL FORWARD)

Durant is known for his scoring ability, size and versatility as a player, standing at 6’10” he can handle the ball and shoot from long range with ease, he has won the NBA scoring title 4 times, and been named the NBA Most Valuable Player once in 2014. He’s also been named an NBA All-Star 13 times and has been named to the All-NBA Teams 10 times. He won two championships with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 and was named Finals MVP on both occassions.

4) TIM DUNCAN (POWER FORWARD)

Duncan was a key member of the Spurs dynasty that won five NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. Duncan was known for his fundamental skills, intensity, and leadership on the court. He was a 15-time NBA All-Star, a member of the All-NBA First Team 10 times, and the NBA Most Valuable Player twice in 2001–02 and 2002–03 seasons. He was also the NBA Finals MVP in 1999, 2003 and 2005. He’s considered one of the best power forwards of all time and one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the game.

5) KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR (CENTRE)

Kareem played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1969 to 1989. Kareem is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, with 38,387 points, which is the most points scored by any player in professional American basketball, He was a 6-time NBA Most Valuable Player, a 19-time NBA All-Star, and a member of the All-NBA First Team 15 times. He also won six NBA championships, one with the Milwaukee Bucks in and five with the Los Angeles Lakers.

6) SHAQUILLE O’NEAL (CENTRE)

Shaq was known for his size, strength, and dominant play on the court. At 7’1″ and 325 lbs, he was one of the largest and strongest players in the league, and was known for his ability to overpower opponents with his physicality. He was a 15-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA First Team 8 times, He won the NBA MVP award once in 2000 and the NBA Finals MVP award three times. Along with Kobe Bryant, he lead the Los Angeles Lakers to three NBA championships, and the Miami Heat to one in 2006.

7) STEPH CURRY (POINT GUARD)

Probably the greatest shooter in the history of the game, Curry is known for his excellent outside shooting, ball-handling and playmaking. He led the league in scoring twice in 2015 and 2016, and he has been named the NBA Most Valuable Player twice in 2015 and 2016. Curry is an eight-time NBA All-Star. He’s also been named the NBA’s All-Star Game MVP twice. He’s led the Golden State Warriors to six NBA Finals appearances and four championships.

8) HAKEEM OLAJUWON (POWER FORWARD / CENTRE)

Often referred to as “The Dream”, Hakeem was known for his offensive skills, footwork and defense, he was a 12-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA First Team 6 times. He led the league in blocks per game for 3 seasons and he’s considered one of the best defensive players in the history of the game, he won the NBA MVP award once in 1994, and the NBA Finals MVP award twice in 1994 and 1995. He played for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 2002, and was a key member of the team that won back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995.

9) JERRY WEST (POINT GUARD / SHOOTING GUARD)

The “Logo” is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game. West played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960 to 1974, and was a 14-time NBA All-Star. He led the league in scoring in 1970. Jerry West’s storied career included 14 All-Star appearances, 12 All-NBA honors, five All-Defensive Teams and an NBA championship. He is the only player to win a Finals MVP despite losing the Finals.

10) DIRK NOWITZKI (POWER FORWARD / CENTRE)

Dirk played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA from 1998 to 2019. Nowitzki was known for his scoring ability, shooting range, and versatility as a player. He is a 13-time NBA All-Star, a member of the All-NBA First Team 8 times and he won the NBA MVP award in 2007, he led the league in scoring once in 2006–2007, and is also the only player in NBA history to play for 21 seasons with one team. Nowitzki is best known for leading the Mavericks to their first NBA championship in 2011.

11) ELGIN BAYLOR (SMALL FORWARD)

He played for the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1958 to 1972. Baylor was known for his scoring, passing, and rebounding abilities, he was a 11-time NBA All-Star, a member of the All-NBA First Team 10 times, and won the NBA MVP award in 1959. He is considered one of the greatest players of his era, he helped lead the Lakers to eight NBA Finals appearances and won one championship ring in 1972 before he retired during the season.

12) DAVID ROBINSON (CENTRE)

He played for the San Antonio Spurs from 1989 to 2003, and was a keymember of the team that won the NBA championship in 1999. Robinson was known for his size, strength, and shot-blocking ability. He was a 10 time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and won the NBA MVP award in 1995. He led the league in rebounding twice and in blocks per game once. He is also considered one of the best defensive players in the history of the game.

COACH : GREGG POPOVICH

Greg Popovich is considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game. He has been the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs since 1996 and under his guidance, the team has become one of the most successful and consistent franchises in the league. Popovich is known for his ability to create a culture of excellence, and for his emphasis on fundamentals, defence, and teamwork. He has led the Spurs to five NBA championships, and has been named the NBA Coach of the Year three times in 2003, 2012, and 2014. He’s considered one of the best coaches of all time, known for his ability to adapt to different players and styles over the years and his consistency in achieving high standards of performance.
